The origin of its name (“Bastion“, fortified place) already indicates the origin and past “warrior” of this noble town.
The stronghold of the kingdoms of Navarre and Castile was surrounded by a wall in the Middle Age. At the top of the town it holds the Temple-Fortress of Santo Cristo.
Regarding of the Middle Age, Labastida was becoming one of the most important places of the whole Rioja Alavesa on its Golden Age (centuries XVI and XVII) due to its strategic location between Ebro river and Sierra Cantabria mountains.
